Sports Speak Up! Readers sounds off on UNM athletics budget crisis

HAVING ATTENDED (Tuesday’s) UNM Board of Regents Finance and Facilities subcommittee meeting, I was gratified to hear only the words “debt reduction” and not “debt forgiveness” uttered, at least not yet. What is still very much on the table is reduction in UNM sports programs. With the outcry that resulted from Paul Kreb’s recommendation that the ski team be eliminated, it will be interesting to see how current AD Eddie Nuñez negotiates this slippery slope. One thing is certain, however, something has to give.

CYNICAL ADMITTEDLY, but it looks like the (UNM) AD is just asking the Regents to let him kick the can down the road with promises that in two years Athletics will be in the black and even begin to repay. Well, if they cut one or two of the sports that are and have consistently been big losers (in more ways than one), maybe they can live within their budgets.

CUT FOOTBALL. Rebuild Basketball. Support our athletic programs that have proven success at the national level.

AS A NATIVE New Mexican, I have but one word for the pride I felt during Sunday night’s sports hall of fame banquet: None. Who runs that mess? I went to honor Dr. Tony Sandoval and they couldn’t even get his name right. And to DS from Los Lunas, should we double Joe Franklin’s salary because of all the fans and money he brings the university? Believe me, he got plenty of extra attention during that banquet on Sunday and he wouldn’t leave the stage.
