DEMING – A student was in custody Monday afternoon after allegedly bringing a handgun to Deming High School.
The Deming Public Schools released a statement at 3:20 p.m. on Monday stating that one unidentified student was detained by security staff at Deming High School. The weapon was recovered without incident.
The district’s statement indicated that the presence of the handgun was reported by students, and praised “coordinated efforts by DHS Campus Security, staff and local law enforcement.”
All students and campus zones are safe, with no lockdown or other further security measures indicated.
No further information was made available as of 3:40 p.m.
Deming Police Chief Bobby Orosco confirmed that the DPD was contacted by the school at 1:11 p.m. and detained a 15-year-old male at the school. No information was yet available on any charges in the incident.
