What is Garrey Carruthers most proud of accomplishing in his professional journey?
“I think probably an ability to provide a positive vision for the state of New Mexico and for our great university. Setting a positive tone and leading institutions in a positive way.”
He cites an outstanding alumni plaque awarded to him by Iowa State University, where he earned his Ph.D. that reads: “Garrey Carruthers Educator and Statesman.”
“At the university, it’s the inability to resolve some of the more challenging issues, such as how to increase enrollment in an environment nationally when enrollment is declining.
“And I think I’m going to lament the fact that I wasn’t able to resolve our athletic conference situation at NMSU, where we are coming up on independent football. I have just not been able to put us in a better position for our athletic programs – something that is becoming more challenging for every university not named Ohio State or Michigan.”
