SANTA FE, N.M. — A look back at the top sports stories in northern New Mexico


HIRED!: The girls high school basketball coaching vacancies at Los Alamos and Española Valley have been filled. Lanse Carter, who was last an interim head coach at Santa Fe High School, takes over the Hilltoppers, and Joe Estrada, last at Valencia, will guide the Sundevils. The two worked together with Carter as head coach and Estrada an assistant at Pojoaque Valley, winning state championships in 2008 and 2009.


FINAL VICTORY: Longtime Santa Fe Prep coach Tove Shere completed her 21st and final season by celebrating one more state championship as the girls held on to beat Capitan 74-62 on Saturday in the Class 3A meet at the University of New Mexico’s Track and Soccer Complex. Sophomore Hayden Colfax led the way for the Blue Griffins, earning individual gold medals in the 100-meter hurdles (15.76 seconds) and triple jump (34 feet, 11 inches).


GOLDEN DAYS: Outside of the Santa Fe Prep, other locals brought home gold:

3A boys: Isaiah Armijo, Pecos, 3,200 run 10:11.19; Sean Coles, Santa Fe Prep, high jump 6-2; Sam Sparks, Santa Fe, triple jump, 42-2¼.

2A boys: Frankie Ortiz, Mesa Vista, 100 dash 11.86; Andres Blea, Escalante, long jump 20-2¾.

2A girls: Abrianna Griego, Mesa Vista, 200 dash 27.49, 400 dash 1:01.67.

1A boys: Ryan Johnson, Roy, 1,600 run 4:50.68, triple jump 42-04; Deven Thompson, New Mexico School for the Deaf, shot put 46-04¼, discus 130-2.

1A girls: Katy Scott, Springer, discus 100-3.


STILL MORE TRACK: The Class 4A-6A state track and field championships will be decided today and Saturday at the UNM Track and Soccer Complex and several locals check in with the top seeds in their events:

• 6A girls: Riannah Varela, Santa Fe, triple jump 37-8½.

• 5A girls: Rebecca Green, Los Alamos, shot put 41-4, discus 135-10.

• 4A boys: Jonah Vigil, Taos, 100 dash 10.82, 200 dash 21.57, 400 dash 46.99, long jump 22-11; Miguel Coca, West Las Vegas, 800 run 1:55.17, 1,600 run 4:24.54, 3,200 run 9:53.41; Arjay Ortiz, Robertson, 300 hurdles 39.87; John Olivas, Taos, high jump 6-2; St. Michael’s 4×200 relay 1:30.99; Taos medley relay 3:44.27, 4×400 relay 3:22.46.

• 4A girls: Lauren Chafins, St. Michael’s, 400 dash 59.12; Abigail Gunther, Taos, 300 hurdles 47.48, pole vault 11-0; Cora Cannedy, Taos, 3,200 run 12:00.15; Faith Powell, Taos, long jump 17-9¾, high jump 5-4, triple jump 36-10½.

HOOPS: Potential college basketball players will have a chance locally to display their talents when Northern New Mexico College holds the first Eagle Showcase Camp June 21-24 in Española. All varsity games will be played at the NNMC Eagle Memorial Sportsplex and regional college coaches from the NAIA, NCJCAA, NCAA D2 and NCAA D3 are expected to be in attendance.
