LAS CRUCES – Kelsey Horton broke the New Mexico State single-season record for home runs, helping New Mexico State secure the 9-7 victory over Grand Canyon on Saturday for their second-straight WAC Tournament title.
The Aggies (29-22) clinch an automatic NCAA Tournament berth and learn their assignment today during a selection show party that is open to the public at the Fulton Center beginning at 7:30 p.m.
It is the fourth NCAA Tournament berth in NMSU program history.
Horton, also the regular season league MVP, singled in a run in the second inning before a two-run shot in the fourth inning gave the Aggies the lead for good at 6-4. It was her 25th homer this season, setting the NMSU mark.
“I’m extremely proud of our group because everyone has accepted and embraced their role on this team,” NMSU coach Kathy Rodolph said. “Kelsey has led us all year but we’ve had a lot of contributions. It comes down to being selfless and doing what’s best for the team.”
Samaria Diaz (6-9) was credited for the pitching win for NMSU, but Analise De La Roca got the final five outs against Grand Canyon (31-28) in scoreless relief for her first save. GCU had 11 hits.
