Two candidates for the state Legislature were certified today as winners of their respective primary elections following recounts.
Clemente Sanchez of Grants is the Democratic nominee in Senate District 30, and Cliff Pirtle of Chaves County is the Republican nominee in Senate District 32.
Sanchez picked up two votes in a recount to end up with an 11-vote lead over Maxine Velasquez in a four-way race. He’ll run in the November general election against Republican Vickie Perea of Belen. Sanchez had lost the Democratic primary four years ago by just five votes to David Ulibarri, who has held the Senate seat since then. Ulibarri lost his seat, coming in third in last month’s primary.
Pirtle picked up one vote in a recount, finishing 10 votes ahead of Chad Hamill of Roswell. He’ll run in November against longtime Democratic incumbent Tim Jennings, who is the Senate’s president pro tem.
The State Canvassing Board met today to certify the results of the two recounts, which were required by law because the results of the June 5 primary were so close.
