Border Agent Killed in ATV Accident

LAS CRUCES – A U.S. Border Patrol agent died in the line of duty Friday evening after an ATV accident near Fort Hancock, Texas. The agent is identified as 29-year-old Leopoldo Cavazos Jr.

An investigation into the accident is being conducted by the U.S. Border Patrol’s El Paso sector.

Cavazos was a native of Houston, Texas, and entered on duty with the U.S. Border Patrol May 22, 2006, as a member of the 621st Session of the Border Patrol Academy. After graduating from the Academy, he was assigned to the Fort Hancock station in the El Paso sector. He served at that station his entire career. While assigned there, Cavazos served as a Border Patrol agent, a Field Intelligence agent, a safety officer and a first responder. He also participated in several operations in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.
