Sports Speak Up! More on the fate of UNM athletic programs

SO NOW THAT Lobo Baseball/Softball has concluded, not one post in Sports Speak Up! about how bad the baseball & softball teams played. Guess no one cares. Sorry Ray Birmingham, looks like we found which two sports to eliminate.

I LOVE HOW people suggest UNM football drop down to the Big Sky Conference, somehow thinking other sports will continue in the MWC. (Men’s and women’s basketball) and other sports would most likely drop down to the WAC. So many sports fans in this community think the MWC is not worthy of their support. A football season with Northern Arizona & Montana State & a basketball season (with) Chicago State, Utah Valley, (and) Cal Bakersfield will bring out less, not more fans, no matter how many New Mexicans are in uniform.

AS PART OF determining which sports to drop, I suggest that the most critical factor is not financial but rather the physical impacts of the sports on the student-athletes. In other words, which sports causes the most career ending, life changing and even life ending harm to the student athletes? Beyond that, what are the long term cost to UNM to take care of those players in order to either rehabilitate them or take care of them forever?

THE FOOTBALL fan in chief is making noises about sending all the black players back to Africa. Latin baseball players could be next. He’ll send them all back to Mexico!
