Big I Ramp Closing During Weekend

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Big I ramp from eastbound Interstate 40 to northbound Interstate 25 will remain closed through much of the weekend.

A detour route will divert traffic to the Big I frontage road system, but a transportation official urged drivers to seek routes that avoid heavy truck traffic on the frontage roads.

The closure could remain in effect until 5 a.m. Monday, but officials say the ramp could reopen earlier.

The detour route will direct eastbound I-40 traffic to exit at Fourth Street, said Phil Gallegos, spokesman for the Department of Transportation.

Detour traffic will travel about three miles on the Big I frontage roads, entering I-25 just north of Comanche NE.

The detour will require drivers to pass through several intersections equipped with traffic signals, including those at Menaul NE and Comanche NE.

But he urged drivers to use alternate routes if possible.

For example, West Side drivers may consider avoiding the Big I by traveling north on Coors and taking Paseo del Norte to I-25, he said.

Other eastbound I-40 drivers could use the Carlisle NE exit to turn around, then travel west on I-40 to the northbound I-25 on-ramp, he said.

The $350,000 renovation project will resurface an overpass over I-40, making the on-ramp safer and extending the life of the overpass, Gallegos said.
