ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque Police Department detectives are investigating after they say a man was shot and critically injured in an apartment complex near Yale and Avenida Cesar Chavez SE early Wednesday morning.

Simon Drobik of the Albuquerque Police Department said that around 3:45 a.m. officers were called to the Mountain View Apartments, in the 1300 block of Columbia SE. When they got there, they found a man with at least one gunshot wound to his chest.

“He was immediately transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital where he is still listed in critical condition,” Drobik wrote in an email early Wednesday afternoon.

Drobik did not identify the victim.

He said it is an active investigation and no persons of interest have been identified.

Throughout the morning, family members, friends and neighbors of the person shot gathered to watch investigators combing the scene for evidence.

Angelica Rivers lives in the apartment complex and said she had stepped outside early in the morning to smoke a cigarette when she heard two gunshots and a woman yell for someone to call the police.

“Then this car came by driving so slow, so slow out of there,” Rivers said. “It took off. It made a quick right and a quick left but it seemed like they dropped something. The male came out and then picked it up and then they just skipped.”

She said she did not recognize the car or know who had been shot.

She said gun violence isn’t unusual for the area. In January 2017, a 21-year-old man was killed in an accidental shooting on the other side of the apartment complex.
