Golf briefs: Muttitt to play in PGA Championship

Muttitt to play in PGA Championship

David Muttitt, a teaching pro at Los Altos Golf Course, has qualified for the 2018 PGA Championship. He has played in three of the last five PGA Championships.

He finished tied for fourth, scoring 73-74-70-70 for 1-under par 287 at the PGA Professional Championship that ended Wednesday at the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, Calif.

Muttit needed to finish in the top 20 to earn a berth. This is Muttitt’s third straight berth into the PGA Championship. He also played in the event in 2013.

The PGA Championship is Aug. 9-12 at the Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Mo.

Registration for City ends Tuesday

Registration is open through Tuesday for the 57th annual Greater Albuquerque Men’s City Golf Championship, which takes place June 29-July 1 at Ladera, Los Altos and Arroyo del Oso golf courses.

All players must live in the greater Albuquerque area and have an active Golf Handicap and Information Network number.

The entry fee is $180 per player, which includes green fees, carts, range balls and lunch.

The Championship Flight will be for handicap indexes of 1.9 or lower and will play gross score only from the blue tees.

Other flights include:

  • Presidents (handicap index of 2.0 to 6.0. Will compete gross score only and play from the blue tees)
  • Senior Championship (age 50 and older and will compete with gross score only and play from the white tees)

NM-West Texas Am begins Friday

LAS CRUCES — The 42nd annual New Mexico-West Texas Amateur takes place at Red Hawk Golf Club on Friday through Sunday. The event features top amateur golfers in New Mexico and West Texas. Past winners include Tommy Armour III, Bart Bryant, Rich Beem, D.J. Brigman and others who have since won more than $28 million on pro tours.

This year’s champion will also receive invitations to play in national events such as the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship.

DCP registration spots filling up

Registration for the local Drive, Chip & Putt qualifier for juniors is still open but filling up. Participants, boys and girls ages 7-15, can register at

The Albuquerque qualifier will be at UNM Championship Golf Course on July 18. There is also a qualifier July 13 at NMSU Golf Course in Las Cruces.

Last year, Callia Ward of Albuquerque reached the championship event at Augusta National just before the Masters.
