APD looking for suspects in hit and run homicide last week

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Homicide detectives are looking to identify a driver and her cross-eyed passenger who they suspect intentionally ran over a man in a South Broadway neighborhood last Thursday.

Gilbert Gallegos, a spokesman for the Albuquerque Police Department, said the pair were in a 2000 to 2002 blue Honda Accord.

He said on July 5 around 6 a.m., the suspects struck 28-year-old Joey Chavez on the 1500 block of Edith, near Trumbull SE. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.

Gallegos said the Honda may have front-end damage.

Witnesses described the driver as a Hispanic woman with brown hair and light highlights.

“She has darker skin, a tattoo on her upper left arm, and appears to be in her 30’s,” Gallegos wrote in a statement.

He said the passenger was a man, possibly white, with dark brown or black shoulder-length hair and blue eyes. Witnesses described him “as having cock-eyed or cross-eyed type eyes.”

Police have not said if they believe the suspects knew Chavez or if they know why he was killed.
