NMSP: Suspect who shot at, eluded authorities arrested in Bernalillo

Johnny Black, 32 (NMSP)

SANTA FE, N.M. — It was near a Bernalillo gas station that tribal police arrested a suspect who evaded authorities in northern New Mexico for over a month.

NM State Police spokesman Ray Wilson said a Santa Ana Tribal Police officer spotted 32-year-old Johnny Black around noon Wednesday near Warrior Fuel on US 550.

“Black was successfully taken into custody,” he said.

Wilson gave no other details on Black’s arrest or how he was found.

The arrest came a day after Santa Fe Crime Stoppers offered a $1,000 reward for Black, who was wanted on numerous charges stemming from two separate pursuits in Española during which he shot at authorities.

Shortly after Black was arrested by police, the FBI took him into custody.

FBI spokesman Frank Fisher said the agency had filed a federal warrant on July 2 for Black’s arrest related to one of the shootings.

He said Black is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm in Indian County.
