Firefighters leapt into action Thursday night to extinguish a swamp cooler fire and save a tabby cat near Downtown, according to Albuquerque Fire Rescue.
AFR Lt. Tim Smith said no humans were injured in the fire that occurred around 6 p.m. at a home in the 600 block of Luna NW, near Lomas and 12th.
Smith said arriving crews found smoke billowing from a rooftop swamp cooler and were able to snuff the blaze within minutes.
AFR spokesman Tom Ruiz said when a firefighter found the cat inside, its fate was not so certain.
“It was not doing very well, for lack of a better description,” he said.
But crews immediately brought the cat outside and put an oxygen mask on its face.
“Within a couple minutes, the cat was revived,” Ruiz said. “They absolutely saved that cat’s life.”
Officials say the cat is going to be OK, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
