Prep soccer notes: Martinez taking over at Cibola

Cibola has hired Daniel Martinez to become the Cougars’ new varsity boys soccer coach.

Martinez most recently was coaching the Los Lunas High boys. He takes over Cibola’s program from Cameron Clarke, who resigned.

REGIONAL HONORS: TopDrawerSoccer has announced some regional teams from the 2017-18 season, and a handful of New Mexico girls, including two from state champion La Cueva, were named to the all-West region squad.

From the Bears, making the regional team were goalkeeper Kat Robinson and forward Karlee Maes. Also chosen were Cibola forward Lexi Baca, Volcano Vista midfielder Brianna Martinez and Sandia defender Hannah Gallegos. They all become eligible for TopDrawerSoccer’s All-America teams.

La Cueva’s Amber Ashcraft was chosen the West region coach of the year. The region includes players from Nevada, Utah and schools from California who compete only in the fall.
