ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The NBC news series, “Dateline,” will feature a segment on the death of Don Fluitt.

The episode, “The Figure in the Garage,” airs at 9 p.m. Monday, July 30, on NBC.

Host Dennis Murphy looks into the case of Fluitt, a former Bernalillo County firefighter, who was found stabbed to death in the garage of his Northwest Albuquerque home on Dec. 29, 2016.

Murphy said the detectives called on their usual tools like DNA analysis to look at signs of a blood cleanup with special chemicals.

“But it was story told in the jailhouse that would pull it all together, that would explain that murky surveillance video of a hooded figure,” he said. “… And underscore the tragic story of the girl in the middle of everything.”

Fluitt and his ex-wife, Christine White, have a daughter together; she was 11 at the time of her father’s death.

A jury found Terry Lee White guilty of killing his wife’s ex-husband on June 15.

Fluitt had been working for a company that provides support and care to individuals with developmental disabilities. His daughter called his co-workers when she was unable to reach him, and they found his body when they went to his house to check on him.

Terry Lee White later told a fellow jail inmate that he and his wife worried their custody arrangement was going to change, police said, and he described stabbing 54-year-old Fluitt with a steak knife.

The one-hour broadcast includes interviews with Fluitt’s brother Dennis, his co-worker Valerie Torres, Detective Matthew Caplan among others.
