Rio Rancho police say they are investigating a 6-year-old girl’s death on Saturday as a homicide and are in the process of searching the home.
Rio Rancho Police Department Capt. Ron Vigil said the little girl’s death was “intentional” and not an accident.
Vigil would not disclose how the girl died or what led police to determine it was intentional, but he said nobody is under arrest yet in the case.
“We have not identified any suspects yet,” he said.
Police were called to a home in the 250 block of Moonstone NE, near N.M. 528 and Northern, on Saturday morning, where they found the girl dead. They interviewed several people at the home, including the girl’s mother.
Police said the girl and her mother had been staying at the home for an undetermined amount of time.
Vigil said an autopsy was being done Sunday to determine the girl’s cause of death. Authorities initially said she was 7 but clarified Sunday that she was 6 years old.
He said police have called in additional resources on the case.
RRPD is working with the Children, Youth and Families Department because other children were living in the home at the time, and the FBI is helping officers with “manpower” to execute the search warrant.
