Sports Speak Up! Angst about sports-cutting at UNM isn’t over

THE ANGER TOWARD UNM should be directed where it belongs. An NCAA that assists the P-5 in crushing non P-5 schools. ESPN who doesn’t black out non sold out home games. Congress, who passed Title IX, an unfunded mandate (I support equality). The MWC, which doesn’t sponsor men’s soccer (only 5 schools have men’s soccer). Don’t blame any sport spared the ax. This community would be so different if we’d just Buy Tickets And Attend Games! Time to rally around all our fall sports and support them in the manner they deserve.

— Rudy the Attorney

SINCE BOTH gubernatorial candidates and several legislators have weighed in positive, it appears that the sports destroyed by the Regents will be restored in January. However, the effect on recruiting and reputation of UNM athletics will take years to fix.

JUST WONDERING, was the save the UNM sports rally an “open meeting”? Did they publish an agenda? Did they publish their “process” for how they came to the conclusion that no sports should be cut? Did they offer any suggestions as to how the athletic dept could meet budget or Title 9 requirememts? Yeah, I thought so.

THE TWO (2) reasons my wife and I gave up our season tickets to UNM football & men’s basketball after 20 plus years including Lobo Club membership for some of those years. First, the individuals who knelt during the Air Force football game last year with Coach Davie’s approval. We do not believe they should express their opinions while wearing the UNM uniform as they also represent my University, us alums/season ticket holders and Lobo Club members. Secondly, the sorry non-conference schedules for both the football and men’s basketball programs. We refuse to pay.

LOBO FOOTBALL season tickets lagging? Fans aren’t flocking to buy tickets for Incarnate Word and Liberty? No mystery there. If UNM would schedule comparable teams from the Group of Five, thus making the non conference schedule more attractive, ticket sales might improve. See NMSU scheduling Central Michigan.
