ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Police arrested an armed suspect in a northeast Albuquerque neighborhood Thursday night, nearly six hours after they say he shot at officers in a nearby Walmart parking lot.
Albuquerque police spokesman Simon Drobik said the suspect is in custody but he did not identify him.
Drobik said it all started as a suspicious person call around 4 p.m. at the Walmart near Chico and Eubank NE.
When officers arrived, he said, the man fired at them in front of the Walmart before fleeing into an adjacent neighborhood.
Drobik said no officers were injured and they did not return fire.
From there the SWAT team, police dogs and helicopter were called in to search for the man in the neighborhood, which was between Eubank and Conchas, and Copper and Chico.
“We have to make a methodical search for security and the safety of the citizens,” he said.
By nightfall, the police helicopter had left and tactical vehicles could be seen headed toward the center of the neighborhood as a few flash bangs rang out.
