Talking Grammer, Ep. 13: The hectic life of preps sports editor James Yodice

In Episode 13, I sit down with longtime Journal prep sports editor James Yodice.

It’s late August which means it’s time for the craziness of high school sports for another season. And there is no more chaotic scene during the high school sports season than in newsroom sports departments across the country on Friday nights scrambling to get in as much high school football coverage as possible.

James has been a pro at doing that. The amount of copy he churns out is unlike anything I’ve seen of any other colleague at any other paper I’ve worked.

So, as the chaos is about to start, I figured I’d talk with James now to give readers not only a big of a preview of the upcoming high school football season, but also a glimpse at what exactly it means to be a high school sports editor at the state’s largest paper.

In addition to a mini season preview, he tells us about the time his computer caught fire, some of his favorite places to cover a game in the state and how much he enjoys having a colleague who sings the Alamogordo High School fight song during the hectic Friday nights.

The podcast is still primarily going to be Lobo hoops. So for those who don’t care about prep sports or a conversation with the Journal’s prep sports editor, don’t worry. More hoops is coming soon. But for the rest of you, I hope you enjoy a little change of pace in this episode.
