Earlier in the day, NMSU opened its season with a 3-1 tournament win over Pacific. NM State closes its run at the Sun Devil Classic with a match against UT Arlington on Saturday at 11 a.m. MT.

How it Happened

NM State (1-1) fell behind early in the first set and four-point rally gave ASU (2-0) a 10-4 lead over the Aggies. New Mexico State could not find its momentum and found its deficit growing larger and an ace by the Sun Devils left the Aggies trailing by seven late in the set. Another ASU ace closed out the set as New Mexico State fell 25-15.

After a kill by Tatyana Battle opened the second set, the Aggies could not find a rhythm and gave up a seven-point rally to Arizona State. NM State went back-and-forth with ASU and a four-point run late in the set gave the team hope, but the deficit was too much to overcome and the New Mexico State squad fell 25-17.

NM State kept the set close early on, but after tying the set 8-8, the Aggies gave up a rally to the Sun Devils and fell behind 11-8. The Aggies hung with ASU and came within a point of Arizona State but the Sun Devils pulled away with a late run, forcing NM State to call a timeout while trailing 17-13. Errors continued to plague the New Mexico State squad and back-to-back aces by ASU put NM State behind by 20-15. The Aggies could not rally and fell in the third and final set 25-18.
