The University of New Mexico Lobos (1-1) got four goals from four players, two in each half, and were never really threatened in a 4-2 women’s soccer win over Pacific (0-3).
The Lobos now go for a sweep of their home stand as the team hosts Idaho State on Sunday at 1 pm at the UNM Soccer Complex.
UNM got on the board at the 34:18 mark of the first half when Jessie Hix crashed the box on a Jill Olguin corner kick and headed it home for a 1-0 lead. Just 4:32 later UNM got another header to make it 2-0.
In the second half UNM made it 3-0 on a play that started innocently enough. Freshmen keeper Malia Vanisi, playing in her first career game, punted a ball deep down the middle of the field, where it was flicked on by Jenna Killian to Alesia Garcia, who one-times it just inside the back post over Heslop for a world-class goal.
Kendall Bietsch got Pacifc on the board at 3-1 with 17:52 left, but UNM had an answer. Lelani Baker weaves her way through the box to the middle and then pulled a shot back against the grain for a 4-1 lead with 4:51 to go.
Pacific took advantage of a handball in he box by UNM with just 1:23 to go, conferring a penalty kick with Bietsch doing the honors to make it 4-2, accounting for the final score.
UNM outshot Pacific 15-12 including 7-4 on net. Vanisi had two saves, along with an assist, in her first career match.
NOTES: Hix’s goal was her 11th career tally … UNM’s last match against Pacific was also a high scoring affair as UNM won 5-2 in 2016.
