Sports Speak Up! Readers bullish on UNM men’s soccer, bearish on Tiger-Lefty matchup

THIS WEEK’S release of the 2019 Baseball Schedule was a great gift! Usually the upcoming season’s Schedule is released in mid-Sept. And is the Lobo’s Men’s Basketball Schedule usually completed this late ?


SO, A COUPLE of really good, but clearly past their prime, (very rich) golfers are going to go head-to-head for a bunch of someone else’s money and we’re supposed to care. If they were playing for their own money, then, it might be a little bit interesting.

GREAT FRIDAY NIGHT supporting Lobo men’s soccer at the UNM soccer complex. Well , other than having to listen to a “performer” scream and cackle her version of the national anthem. Fortunately the mic went silent numerous times. Who auditions these people? For goodness sake, sing the song the way it was written. Francis Scott Key is still turning over in his grave.

SINCE THE STATE coffers were just boosted by $1.2 billion (with a “B”) from the recent oil boom, one would think money can be easily found for the hugely popular and successful UNM men’s soccer team esp. since so many New Mexico kids actually play soccer.

WELL, IT’S NOT time yet to cut UNM football, but the word is out — youth participation in football has declined 30 percent over the last few years. Football is on a downward spiral. How about we (UNM) figure out a way to get even farther ahead of the NCAA soccer curve. Yes, Title IX compliance is a problem now, but let’s work toward the future.

THE IRONY OF the “Dodger Killer” prank directed at Justin Verlander is that he did not win a game in the 2017 World Series against the Dodgers. In fact, in three World Series (2006, 2012, 2017), Verlander has never won a game.
