ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A 12-year-old girl is credited with the rescue of her baby sister after police say she snatched the 2-year-old from her father as he held the toddler aloft by her hair and threatened her with a hammer early Tuesday morning.
Jwyanza Vallantyne, 28, is facing child abuse charges after multiple witnesses called 911 around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday to report a disturbance in the Sierra Meadows apartment complex parking lot on Eubank NE.
Witnesses said they saw Vallantyne dangling the girl by her hair with one hand and raising a hammer behind his head, as if preparing to strike.
As an argument intensified between Vallantyne and the girls’ mother, police said the pre-teen girl “forcefully” grabbed the toddler out of her father’s hands, and Vallantyne left the apartment complex.
Police later found him walking along Eubank and arrested him. Both children were found safe in the apartment.
Vallantyne and the girls’ mother were arguing, neighbors said. The couple had lived in the complex, along with the kids, only about one or two months.
