Pecos River Rehabilitation Under Way

COWLES (AP) — State officials are on a mission to return the Pecos River to pristine condition.

But they say it could take time because the popular recreation area in the Santa Fe National Forest has suffered years of abuse.

KRQE-TV reports that a private company that hauls out trash can’t keep up. Graffiti and the influx of campers to the river bank also mar the natural beauty.

The state Game and Fish Department has put up a fence next to the river to protect riparian vegetation as part of a rehabilitation project. That means campers will have less space along the river.

The state Department of Transportation also has put up a fence along the main road.

The improvements are funded by fees assessed for hunting and fishing licenses.
