Police arrest Las Cruces man suspected of beating pregnant girlfriend

LAS CRUCES – Police arrested a Las Cruces man suspected of beating his pregnant girlfriend Friday, Aug. 31.

Joel Gutierrez, 23, of the 5400 block of Melody Lane, is charged with one-third degree felony count of aggravated battery against a household member and a misdemeanor count of battery against a household member.

On Aug. 31, police were dispatched to an apartment complex on 1420 S. Telshor Blvd., about 4:20 a.m. in reference to a domestic violence incident.

According to police reports, the suspect, later identified as Gutierrez, fled the scene on foot when officers arrived.

Investigators learned from the girlfriend that she had gone outside to throw away the trash and when she came back in, Gutierrez was in her kitchen. She told investigators Gutierrez followed her into the living room and pushed her down on the couch.

The girlfriend then alleged Gutierrez covered her mouth with one hand and started choking her with the other. She alleged he continued to push her and choke her until she convinced him to stop because she is pregnant.

Police arrested Gutierrez at his residence and was booked at the Doña Ana County Detention Center.

Gutierrez is being held on a $5,000 secured bond.
