ALAMOGORDO – Alamogordo Police Department detectives arrested a 27-year-old man in connection with the fatal shooting in the 900 block of Mescalero Street Friday.
APD Lt. David Kunihiro said Jonathan C. Smith Jr. is charged with one count each of first-degree felony murder, fourth-degree felony felon in possession of a firearm and petty misdemeanor concealing identity.
Smith was jailed at the Otero County Detention Center pending his appearance in court.
Kunihiro said APD officers responded to the 900 block of Mescalero Street around 12:20 p.m. Friday in reference to a subject suffering from a gunshot wound.
“While en route, Alamogordo Police Department officers learned the suspect had fled the residence on foot,” he said. “Officers gained a description of the suspect and quickly saturated the area.”
Kunihiro said APD officers were able to locate the suspect a short distance from the residence.
“The victim was transported to the hospital and succumbed to his injures at the hospital,” he said. “Smith was arrested a short distance away from the crime scene. It appears that there was some kind of disturbance that occurred inside the residence. There was a disturbance that led to one shot being fired.”
Kunihiro said he is not releasing the name of the victim at this time.
“I am not going to release his name at this time,” he said. “I am going to allow the family to have a little bit a grieving before we release his name in the paper.”
