Two killed in small plane crash identified

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico State Police have identified the two people who were killed in a small plane crash near Double Eagle airport Tuesday afternoon as Michael Vavrek, 68, and his wife Judy Vavrek, 67.

Officer Ray Wilson, a NMSP spokesman, said Michael was the pilot and Judy was the passenger. They’re both from Albuquerque.

He said around 4:30 p.m. state police were called to reports of a downed aircraft west of Albuquerque. State Police, with the help from Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, Albuquerque Fire Rescue and first responders found the single-engine Cessna about ten miles west of the airport.

A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration has said the pilot reported ice and a loss of engine power right before the crash.

Michael and Judy Vavrek were pronounced dead at the scene, Wilson said.

“NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) and FAA investigators will be on scene later today to investigate the crash,” Wilson wrote in an email.
