'A' Club Plans Shindig

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Albuquerque High “A” Club will induct eight individuals, a basketball team and a relay team into the AHS Athletics Hall of Fame at its 11th annual Breakfast of Champions on Sept. 12.



Spokesman and Hall of Fame member Bobby Santiago said the school’s past and present golf teams also will be honored. Bill Mann, class of 1955, will receive the Distinguished Service award.

The inductees are:

• James O. Brooks, class of 1950, a football letterman and a three-time state champion in the mile run.

• Ronnell Brown, 1984, an all-city, all-district and all-state football player, and a member of the 1984 state championship boys basketball team, now an AHS assistant football coach.

• Christel Chavez, 1993, all-city, all-district and all-state in basketball. Chavez, who later played basketball at the Air Force Academy, died in the line of duty while serving her country in 2002.

• Charlotte Stevens Ferguson, 1954. Stevens Ferguson was a pioneer of girls athletics who excelled in swimming, field hockey and softball.

• Ray Flores, 1958, a pentathlete and a two-time state wrestling champion.

• Tommy French, 1986, an all-city, all-district and all-state basketball player and a member of the AHS all-time basketball team.

• Anastacio Padilla, 1965. An all-city selection in football, basketball and baseball, Padilla was AHS’s athlete of the year as a senior. He coached Rio Grande to a state big-school baseball title in 1988.

• Carlos Torres, 1958, a two-time state wrestling champion who also lettered in football and track.

• The record-setting 1961 440-yard relay team (Paul Bryant, Robert Mendez, Hiram Carroll, Ray Etherly).

• The 1971 boys state champion basketball team.

The Sept. 12 Breakfast of Champions will be held at AHS. Registration begins at 8 a.m., followed by breakfast at 9.
