Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported Justin Hansen’s condition based on information from the 3rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
State Police say Justin Hansen is back in prison after being treated for injuries following a fight at a southern New Mexico prison, contradicting early reports that he had been so seriously injured he had been placed on life support.
A spokeswoman for the 3rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office said earlier in the evening that Hansen had been placed on life support, but she, State Police and a Department of Corrections spokesman have now confirmed that was not true.
Officer Ray Wilson said State Police responded to the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility in reference to an altercation between Hansen and another inmate, and an investigation is ongoing. Hansen was treated and released.
Hansen is serving an 18-year sentence in a 2008 shovel beating that nearly killed Brittani Marcell, then a 17-year-old Cibola High School student. The crime went unsolved for nearly a decade.
