Prep basketball: Volcano Vista withstands furious Eldorado rally

For 3½ quarters, Saturday night’s boys basketball showdown between No. 3 Volcano Vista and No. 4 Eldorado crept toward the finish line — surprisingly, without much urgency or vitality.

The final four minutes atoned for all of that, and yielded some of the most thrilling basketball of this season.

The visiting Eagles were down 15 points with under four minutes left and came all the way back to tie the game with a 3-point-fueled charge. But alas, the rally fell just short, as the Hawks hit a couple of late free throws for a 79-77 victory.

“We lost a game like this a couple of weeks ago (to Amarillo Palo Duro) — exactly the same way,” Volcano Vista coach Greg Brown said. “So we still have work to do. We need to develop a more reliable killer instinct.”

The Hawks (4-1) led virtually the entire way. Although Eldorado (6-2) had a 10-0 run in the third quarter to cut what was once a 15-point deficit to 45-43 late in the third quarter, Volcano Vista regrouped at the end of the quarter and took 51-45 edge to the final eight minutes.

A pair of free throws by Dion Battle left the Hawks in front by 15 points once more, at 67-52 — and with Eldorado having played a tough road game Friday night at No. 5 Atrisco Heritage while Volcano Vista was coming off a 10-day break, it appeared the Eagles were on heavy legs.

Wrong.

So wrong.

The Eagles electrified the crowd with a barrage of 3-pointers — six of them in under three minutes, and four of them alone from white-hot senior guard Cameron Carter — to get back within 74-72 with 1:25 to go.

Another 3, this one by Kameron Valencia, shaved the Eldorado deficit moments later to 76-75, and a driving layup by Tyler Quintana tied the game at 77 with 25.8 seconds to go.

But at the other end, the Eagles’ Garrett Warren committed a bad foul near midcourt on Cesar Madrid, who made one out of two free throws with 17.5 seconds showing. That proved to be the game-winning point.

“He (Warren) told me he thought he could get a steal,” Eldorado coach Roy Sanchez said.

After an Eldorado turnover, Jake Deatherage added another free throw for a 79-77 lead with 8.1 seconds left.

Quintana was trying to tie the game in the final seconds, but he was whistled for an offensive foul — with Madrid drawing the charge.

Madrid, who led the Hawks with 21 points, admitted there was some late tension.

“They were making this big ol’ comeback, but we were talking about staying together,” Madrid said. “They’re a challenging team. We knew they would be hard core and come at us for 32 minutes.”

Sanchez said having to play Atrisco Heritage the previous night was not a factor.

“Didn’t affect us at all,” he said. “We like to play good teams like that going into the break. We just finally found some openings … I’m pretty proud of our guys for the comeback.”

Brown was asked if his defense was lax late in the game, or whether Eldorado simply was burying difficult shots.

“Both,” he said. “Definitely want to give them credit, but our defensive communication wasn’t as good as it needed to be, and against Eldorado, you need to have everyone accounted for.”

Jalontae Gray added 18 points, Ben Manzano 17 for the Hawks.

Valencia led all scorers with 27 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter. Carter finished with 17 (he was 5-for-6 from long range in the second half) and Quintana 15 points.
