Ten years has flown by for Marisa Demarco.
As the curator of Thursday Night Girl Fight, Demarco wanted to create an event that showcased women performers.
Over the course of a decade, the event has grown and will celebrate its 10th anniversary on Thursday, Jan. 10, at Launchpad.
The event will feature Nizhóní Girls, Saywut?, Chicharra, Ebony Isis Booth, grp.txt, Bianca Sánchez García, Ermine, Merma & Roberta, Sing Down The Moon, Ramonda Holiday, Scissor Lift, Baby Tuna. It will also be hosted by Katrina Benally.
“When we did the first one, I thought it was going to be a one night event,” Demarco says.
Demarco says about a year or so ago — with Launchpad’s help, especially Barney Lopez — we started hosting them every month, with rotating curation and the idea that we could help support local femme organizers and promoters, too.
“The last year plus of showcases has been unbelievably good thanks to the hard work of many people,” she says. “TNGF grew in kind of a horizontal way, and features all kinds of genres of music.”
Demarco says the event’s future is bright and she wants it to continue to evolve.
“I don’t want it to be a repository for women,” she explains. “I want it to be a way for women and people of color to be spotlighted and get booked for other shows. We have a lot of talented people. The goal of this event is to maek sure that there is a place for them to be seen.”
Demarco says the monthly events feel fresh because there is someone new curating the night, as well as new performers.
“Some of the performers, it’s their first show,” she says. “This is an opportunity for them to feel comfortable on stage and get that experience.”
Demarco also curated the 10-year event.
