Sports Speak Up! On coaching turnover, Dallas star, UNM hoops

NOTABLE QUOTE: Bum Phillips, the former NFL coach of the Houston Oilers and the New Orleans Saints once remarked, “There are only two types of coaches: them that have been fired and them that are going to be.” Seems like the current carousel in the NFL bears that out. Colleges, too!

DOES ANYONE else find it cool that Cowboys LB Leighton Vander Esch (a Boise State Bronco) makes a Lobo Howl after making a tackle or sack? Go Cowboys!

— Manny G. from the Hub City

I’M NOT SURE what a “good loss” is but last Tuesday’s loss by UNM to UNLV in the Pit does not a fit in to that category. A couple weeks ago the Rebels lost by 25 points, 97-72, to the 8-7 Bucknell Bison of the Patriot League. I guess Paul Weir’s intense practice regimen explains the lethargic play (less the Nevada game) from this Lobo team. At least the players who don’t move ahead with any kind of professional basketball career will have a leg up on everyone else for a future in the military.

LOBO FANS, players, and coaches need to realize that a team plays its “best” only 1 out of 6 games, its “worst” 1 out of six games, and about “average” the other 4 games. That explains why a Nevada game came be followed by a UNLV game. Nothing you can do about it. It’s the law.

IT WAS GREAT reading Sports Speak Up! on Friday morning. It’s reassuring to know we have so much D1 coaching talent here in the 505!
