Settlement Reached in Jail Mental Health-Care Lawsuit

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Dona Ana County agrees to pay damages and make changes to detention center policies

Dona Ana County has reached a settlement in a lawsuit that alleged the county jail routinely failed to provide adequate mental health care in 2006 and 2007 to prisoners, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.

The newspaper said that according to the settlement document, 14 people who were jail inmates and plaintiffs in the lawsuit will each receive an equal portion of the $400,000 in damages — an amount that includes attorney fees.

The county also agreed to changes to detention center policies, including new mental health-care staffing and monitoring of inmates’ mental conditions, according to the Sun-News.
