Prep wrestling: Cibola takes Joe Vivian title (w/prep results)

Here’s something that hasn’t been written in quite some time:

The Cibola Cougar wrestlers won the Joe Vivian Classic.

Sparked by individual champions Julius Kohn and Anthony Sanchez, the Cougars took down a traditionally strong field Saturday night at Albuquerque High School.

“I don’t know if this is our first time or not,” Cibola coach Adrian Baca said. “But our kids, they worked really hard, and I’m just completely proud of them.”

Cibola scored 175 points, 22 more than Farmington. Volcano Vista was third. Pre-tournament favorite Carlsbad did not bring a full squad to Albuquerque, and another challenger, La Cueva, was ravaged by illness this week and the Bears weren’t at full strength, either.

“It’s been a while for us,” said Kohn, a senior who improved to 23-2 after his 9-0, major decision over Cobre’s Isaiah Marquez in the 113-pound final. He was 5-0 this weekend and won his last three by a combined score of 22-0, and also won his second straight Vivian title. “Coach Baca has put together a really good team.”

There were few thrillers among the 14 weight divisions. Sandia’s Jacob Telles and Capital’s Julian Sanchez were having a fantastic battle at 220 pounds before Telles (18-0) got the upper hand with a takedown and subsequent quick pin at 4 minutes, 30 seconds.

Carlsbad junior Justin Wood became a four-time Vivian champion in one of the closer matches of the night, a tough 3-1 decision over Pojoaque’s previously unbeaten Javier Tapia. He’s the first four-time Vivian champion since Capital’s Jose Tapia (2014-17).

“It’s something I’ve been working for,” said Wood, a state champion last season whose record of 33-1 is tainted only by a loss at the prestigious Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nev. Despite that, he was somehow seeded No. 2, behind Tapia. “After my eighth-grade year, I heard no one had won it as an eighth-grader, and that was my motivation.”

The evening ended on an unusually exciting note. The heavyweight clash between Farmington’s Dante Norberto and Atrisco Heritage’s Ernest Martinez had the crowd on its feet and cheering far more than any other match, with the two biggies throwing each other around the circle for six minutes and beyond, into overtime.

There, Norberto (28-1) won the match 3-1 in the first extra period with a takedown, and the crowd roared. That win also cemented second place in the team standings for the Scorpions.

Norberto was one of three most outstanding wrestlers. Wood was the MOW for the middle weights, and Volcano Vista sophomore Moses Santiago (24-1), who had four pins in five matches at 106 pounds, was the choice at the lower weights.

The Hawks also had champions in Joshua Vega (20-0) at 120 pounds and Manuel Robles (23-0), the latter having shredded his opponents in the 145-pound bracket, including four pins.

Rio Grande produced two winners, with Sergio Arellano (26-1) at 126, where he had pins in four of his five matches as he captured his third Vivian crown, and teammate Alejandro Gutierrez (24-1) at 132 pounds. Cibola’s Sanchez (28-1) blanked Bloomfield’s Gerald Wiza in the 170-pound final. He registered pins in his first four matches.

Valencia’s Robbie Jaramillo (24-0) was dominant at 195 pounds with three pins and 3-0 decision in the final.

Only nine of the 13 No. 1 seeds won their brackets. For the local schools, the Albuquerque Metro Championships are the next big meet, Feb. 1-2 at Atrisco Heritage.
