PRC postpones opening San Juan case

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Public Regulation Commission voted 5-0 Wednesday to postpone discussion until next week on whether to immediately open formal proceedings on plans to close the coal-fired San Juan Generating Station near Farmington.

Parties in the case filed about a half dozen briefs on the issue Tuesday, and the commission wants the PRC’s general counsel to review all those filings before making a recommendation about whether to hold off on examining San Juan until Public Service Co. of New Mexico formally files for the plant’s abandonment in the spring.

PNM and some environmental organizations are concerned that immediately opening a docket could derail a utility-backed legislative initiative to help finance the plant closure.
