ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The deadline for restaurants to enter the 2012 New Mexico State Fair’s Centennial Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge is at 5 p.m. Friday, according to an EXPO New Mexico news release.
Twelve New Mexico restaurants will vie for the title on Tuesday, Sept. 18, and rules and entry forms can be found at exponm.com/entriescompetitions/green-chile-cheeseburger-challenge.
The New Mexico State Fair hosted the inaugural statewide culinary challenge in 2009 after the Buckhorn Tavern in San Antonio, N.M., gained national attention when Buckhorn owner Bobby Olguin beat the host of “Throwdown With Bobby Flay” in the battle for the best green chile cheeseburger.
This year’s challenge is hosted by the State Fair in association with the New Mexico Tourism Department, the New Mexico Department of Agriculture and the New Mexico Restaurant Association.
The winner will receive a special plaque and will be automatically entered into the Tourism Department’s Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail.
The 2012 New Mexico State Fair opens Wednesday, Sept. 12, and runs through Sunday, Sept. 23.
