Speak Up! (Time to move on from UNM sports cuts)

WHAT PART of a lack of funding, Title IX compliance and affiliation with the Mountain West Conference don’t our legislators understand? How many more times do UNM President Garnett Stokes and Athletic Director Eddie Nuñez have to prepare to be grilled on the issue? Now if the Legislature wants to commit $2 million per year for the next decade to fund soccer, skiing and beach volleyball while making sure UNM is Title IX compliant, it’s a go. If not, let’s move on.

SOUTH OF the border – Triple Bogey!! Professional golfer Matt Kuchar collected $1,260,000 for winning a Mexican tournament, paid his Mexican caddie $5,000 … That’s the equivalent of tipping a wait person 98 cents on a $250 tab. After much criticism he relented and paid the caddie $50,000, which is 3.9% (Whaup !!). Typically for a win, the caddie receives 5-10% of winnings (Dollars not Pesos).

THERE WAS a time when the Lobos were almost invincible in the Pit. Opponents feared playing in that once hallowed venue. Sadly, that time has passed. Reconstruction of the Pit, decreased seating, and increasingly mediocre teams have led to the Pit losing its hard earned reputation and becoming just another place to play. Kudos to the Lady Lobos for trying to keep the Pit alive.

AFTER WATCHING Fresno State’s Deshon Taylor in the Saturday afternoon BB game. He is his team’s general, which LOBOS team lacks. Missed so many layups, free throws. In the end of the game, it cost us a win.

YET ANOTHER team has come into altitude and watched the hometown Lobos fade in the second half. Missed free throws and unforced errors are all related to fatigue, which is why UNM has lost 7 games thus far in the Pit. Not to be deterred, Paul Weir said he was going to have his team back at practice Sunday morning after the Saturday night loss to Fresno State. I’m sure they’ll practice Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (game day) as well. This team is beaten before they board the plane at the Sunport for their game vs. Utah State in Logan.
