NM House is tired of those robocalls, too

SANTA FE — The state House passed a bill Tuesday aimed at reducing the number of unsolicited sales calls to New Mexicans’ cell phones.

The legislation, House Bill 424, would update the state’s telephone regulations — which were crafted with land lines, not mobile phones, in mind.

“This bill won’t stop all of those annoying calls you get,” Democratic Rep. Matthew McQueen of Galisteo said, “but it should help.”

The proposal, sponsored by McQueen, now heads to the Senate for consideration.

It updates the state law that already outlines a variety of restriction on sales calls and prohibits automated calls. Legislative analysts said most robocalls are from “scam artists” who ignore restrictions like the national Do Not Call list.
