NAHL hockey returns to metro area

The Albuquerque area is getting another crack at a team competing in the developmental North American Hockey League.

The NAHL announced Thursday that membership had approved a team to be known as the New Mexico Ice Wolves to compete in the 2019-20 season. Its home ice will be the Outpost Ice Arena (9530 Tramway Blvd. NE).

Ownership is Stan E. Hubbard, who moved here 10 years ago when relocating the REELZ television network to the city from Los Angeles. The family has been actively involved with the NM Ice youth hockey program since then. Hubbard also owns KOB-TV.

Players in the NAHL are typically in their teens, and their immediate goal is playing at the collegiate level. An NAHL team, the New Mexico Mustangs, played at the Santa Ana Star Center from 2010-2012.
