Sports Speak Up! Reader salutes Roy/Mosquero girls

HATS OFF TO James Yodice and the Albuquerque Journal for publishing the photo and story of the Roy/Mosquero’s girls basketball team. Whatever the outcome of the state tournament, these 5 girls are champions in every sense of the word.

LADY LOBOS blow a great opportunity to garner a #1 seed by being careless with the ball and failing to execute on offense. Nunn was a nunn-factor; it seemed as if she was afraid of the moment. Lobo guards continuously turn the ball over; often unforced. I expected Coach Bradbury to have the team better prepared. Five fewer turnovers and this would have been a win.

THE LADY LOBOS were terrible at best. They continue to show that they do not value any possession of the basketball. Careless turnovers, lack of ability to guard moving players, poor shooting, poor rebounding, and failure to guard on a simple pick and roll. Other than that you had a good game.

FOR THE UPCOMING Mountain West basketball tournaments, with the decline of New Mexico and San Diego State and their once astounding number of traveling fans, the Thomas and Mack Center is going to be one sparse arena. Disinterested UNLV fans can be tossed in the mix as well. The MWC also has the women’s tournament ending on Wednesday instead of Friday or Saturday, which will have more fans leaving town early. The $60M Pit and Albuquerque with their reasonable hotel rates (no resort fees), entertainment venues, restaurants and golf courses stand ready to bail out these sinking MWC tournaments.

THE PLANNED expansion and improvements of the Outpost Ice Arena by the Hubbard family would fit nicely with UNM adding a women’s ice hockey team to be Title IX compliant. Also, Arizona State, Air Force, Colorado College, and Denver U. all have Div. I men’s teams. UNM should start thinking about moving up from the men’s team being a club sport.

PIT GAME WEDNESDAY NIGHT? Let’s bring some magic to the PIT! … Anthony and Dane, thank you for choosing UNM! I will miss watching you play! Your are great examples for your teammates of how hard work pays off, you will go as far as you want! Lobo fans, make some noise Wednesday night and help the team finish strong!
