In December 2018, after waiting more than a decade, Nallely Hernandez finally got to see her fourth-grade teacher convicted for sexual crimes against her and a classmate.
A jury found former teacher Gary Gregor guilty of three counts of criminal sexual penetration of a minor, four counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and five counts of kidnapping. The crimes took place during the 2007-2008 school year at Española’s Fairview Elementary School.
Since Gregor’s conviction, the Journal North staff has undertaken an investigative project that has produced a series of stories about how Gregor avoided criminal charges or other serious consequences for years, despite repeated allegations of that he had engaged inappropriate behavior with elementary school students in Utah and then in Santa Fe before he began teaching in Española.
Collected here are the story about his December conviction, the Journal North team’s investigative pieces and editorial comment on the Gregor case.
