The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office arrested two brothers and two teenagers in the slaying of a 15-year-old boy who was allegedly lured into a car last Thursday and driven to the East Mountains before he was thrown onto the road and shot to death.
Russell Spencer, 17, Scott Spencer, 19, and Alex Wilson, 17, have all been arrested in connection with the killing of Evyn Scott, who was shot multiple times. His body was found on the shoulder of N.M. 14, near Paa-Ko Golf Drive. It was unclear who the fourth person arrested was.
Authorities declined to discuss a possible motive, but Russell Spencer and Evyn Scott knew each other. A criminal complaint states Russell Spencer was hidden in the trunk when Evyn got into the car with Scott Spencer, Wilson and others. It also states that deputies were told by members in the car that Scott had earlier threatened Russell Spencer.
Russell Spencer is charged with an open count of murder and kidnapping. His older brother, Scott Spencer, is charged with one count each of kidnapping and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Bernalillo County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Felicia Maggard said a total of three juveniles had been arrested in Evyn Scott’s death. She would not name them.
“A 17-year-old male was arrested for an open count of murder, kidnapping and conspiracy,” she said. “Two other juveniles were arrested for kidnapping and conspiracy.”
According to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court, deputies found a body – later identified as Scott’s – around 10:15 p.m. Thursday. The victim had been shot several times, and bullet casings were found near the body.
Deputies found the missing person report that had been filed by Evyn Scott’s mother on Friday.
Scott’s grandmother told detectives she dropped him off Thursday night at a gas station on East Central to hang out with friends. That was the last time a family member saw him.
Deputies identified four of those people as Russell Spencer, Scott Spencer, Wilson and a teenage female.
When detectives tracked down the girl, she told them they had picked up Evyn Scott to “rough him up” and Russell Spencer was hiding in the trunk at the time. Deputies say the teens began beating up Evyn Scott in the back seat as they drove to the East Mountains.
She told detectives that once they got to a secluded spot along the road, Scott was thrown to the ground and Russell Spencer was let out of the trunk.
“She saw Russell Spencer standing over (Scott) and heard three gunshots,” a detective wrote.
Deputies arrested Scott Spencer, Russell Spencer and Wilson soon after taking the girl into custody.
Scott Spencer told detectives they had only given Scott a ride and dropped him off in an area “full of trees and buffalo grass.”
Deputies say Russell Spencer told them he talked to Scott the day before his killing, and that Scott had “wanted him dead.” But he denied seeing him the day of the slaying or being involved in any way.
Police said Russell Spencer has had run-ins with police before, and at one point was on probation, but details were not available Tuesday.
