RIO RANCHO, N.M. — The Albuquerque Concert Band will be performing a free show at the Eldorado High School Performing Arts Center this Sunday from 3 to 4 p.m. featuring the 2019 Bruce Kroken Scholarship winner, percussionist Logan Giese of Rio Rancho High School.

bright spotEvery year, the band awards a $1,000 scholarship to a New Mexico high school senior involved in the music program at his or her school. The scholarship is named after past Albuquerque Concert Band director Bruce Kroken, who died suddenly in 2004.

Kroken was also a director of bands at Manzano High School and associate director of bands at Desert Ridge Middle School. He was a big supporter of community bands, organizers said in a news release.

Students applying for the scholarship must audition before a panel of judges.

This year’s scholarship winner, Giese, is a senior at Rio Rancho High School and has been in the school’s jazz band and advanced wind symphony for three years, as well as the marching band for four, according to a news release.
