Josefina “Josie” Afante passed peacefully at home on March 7, 2019.
She was born on April 8, 1937, to the late Felix and Justiniana Sepagan in Nabua, Philippines, and was predeceased by her siblings, Antonio Sepagan, Felix Sepagan Jr. and Dr. Teresa Beriña, and her beloved husband, Efren Afante.
Josie was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to attend New York University, and then received her master’s degree at Teachers College, Columbia University. Efren and Josie first settled in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where Josie became the first Filipina professor to teach nursing at St. Joseph’s Health Centre.
They later moved to New York City to raise their family. After many years working as the director of nursing at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, Josie retired with Efren in Rio Rancho, N.M., and the family’s ancestral home in the Philippines.
Josie enjoyed traveling, watching the N.Y. Mets, tending to her prized rose gardens, and singing and rooting for her grandson at his Little League games. Josie will be missed by all whose lives she generously touched.
She is survived by her children, Efren Afante and Christina Afante; her cherished grandchildren, Luis Afante and Jayce Afante; and many dear family and friends. Interment occurred at Buhi Catholic Cemetery on March 15, 2019.
