Santa Fe man pleads guilty to deadly DWI crash

SANTA FE — A 24-year-old Santa Fe man pleaded guilty to one count of homicide by vehicle after causing a deadly drunk driving crash two years ago.

Paulo Vega-Mendoza

The Santa Fe District Attorney’s Office said in a press release Tuesday that Paulo Vega-Mendoza pleaded guilty to driving drunk and crashing into motorcyclist Paul Padilla on Airport Road near Cerrillos Road on April 25, 2017. Padilla, 63, later died at an Albuquerque hospital.

Vega-Mendoza faces up to 15 years in prison, according to the release. A police report says Vega-Mendoza rear-ended Padilla and then fled the scene on foot. Santa Fe Police officers caught Vega-Mendoza as he was trying to scale a fence.

A sentencing hearing has not been scheduled.
