John van der Put is 50% comedian.
He’s also 50% magician.
That makes him 100% dragon when he’s onstage.
Van der Put performs under the moniker Piff the Magic Dragon, and his profile continues to rise in the entertainment industry.
He’s now on tour with his “The Lucky Dragon” show.
The English magician and comedian broke through mainstream during his stint on “America’s Got Talent,” where he appeared in 2015 on the show’s 10th season.
Before that, he would perform in Las Vegas, Nev.
And in 2012, he opened for Mumford & Sons during the band’s U.K. tour.
When he’s not on the road, he’s headlining at the Flamingo Casino in Las Vegas, Nev., inside the Piff the Magic Dragon Theatre.
“We’ve been sold-out here in Vegas,” he says. “We’re always trying to come up with new ideas for the show. We’re constantly trying to figure out what makes for the best show.”
Van der Put will perform three shows at The Stage at Santa Ana Star this weekend.
With over 100 million online views, sold-out shows across the U.S. and Canada, van der Put has proved he’s here to stay.
He’s often joined by Mr. Piffles – The World’s Only Magic Performing Chihuahua.
“Mr. Piffles is solving (a) Rubik’s Cube,” he says. “I had to learn how to solve them for the show. It’s mad.”
Van der Put is always willing to take chances and keep his shows fresh.
That means that he’s is constantly working on details.
“This is why I got into performing,” he says. “I love doing shows. We have a backlog of ideas that we’re always trying to make into acts. There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work that has to get done before we can put it on the stage in a show.”
When the theater was named after him at the Flamingo, van der Put felt as if he had finally made it.
“I never dreamed that I’d have the career I have now,” he says. “It takes a lot of hard work. I’d love to tour more and do more comedy specials. Next up is getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Can you imagine?”
