Jonathan David Schmidt, father of Volcano Vista graduate and New Mexico United player Justin Schmidt, was killed in a car accident near Medicine Bow, Wyo., on Saturday, the team announced Thursday.
Justin Schmidt’s mother was injured in the crash and is recovering at the Wyoming Medical Center.
New Mexico United players plan to play in honor of the Schmidt family at Sunday’s Cinco de Mayo home match vs. San Antonio FC.
Players will be wearing armbands in solidarity with their teammate.
“We are shaken and saddened by the news of Jonathan Schmidt’s accident and passing. Our team and our entire community stand with Justin and his family. We are praying for his mother, Jeaneece Schmidt, and will do everything we can to support her full recovery,” said New Mexico United Owner and CEO Peter Trevisani in a statement from the club.
Schmidt, who played collegiately at the University of Washington, was selected in the 2017 MLS Superdraft by Real Salt Lake, for whom he made nine appearances that season. He has made eight starts during the United’s 3-1-5 start in the United Soccer League’s Championship Division.
“I just feel terrible for him and his family and we’re going to be there to support him and every way possible,” said Troy Lesesne, the team’s technical director. “I’ve told (Justin) two or three times now, we don’t even need to talk about a timeline (for his return). All his focus needs to be with his family.”
