NMSP: Man shot, killed by Angel Fire police officer

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Authorities say an Angel Fire police officer responding to a residential fire Sunday morning fatally shot a man who was armed with a knife.

Officer Ray Wilson, a spokesman for New Mexico State Police, said in a news release that the officer had been dispatched to a fire at 14 Mountain Lake Terrace.

“At the scene, the Angel Fire Police officer encountered a man with a knife,” Wilson wrote. “During the encounter, the Angel Fire Police officer discharged his weapon.”

The man was hit and later died in an ambulance. His name has not been released pending identification by the Office of the Medical Investigator.

The NMSP Investigations Bureau was called in to investigate the shooting, and the state Fire Marshal is working to determine the cause of the fire.

The name of the officer involved will be released at a later date, Wilson said.
