Lobo baseball plans memorial for Weller at Friday’s game

The University of New Mexico baseball team has activities planned to honor the late Jackson Weller prior to Friday’s 6 p.m. series opener at home against UNLV.

A pregame tailgate gathering will be held in the parking lot east of Santa Ana Star Field, and a banner will be raised prior to the game. The tailgate begins at 4 p.m. with complimentary food supplied by Rex’s Hamburgers.

Both teams will also come together to kneel around the pitcher’s mound for a moment of remembrance prior to the first pitch. Fans will be invited to join them on the field.

Weller, a 23-year-old pitcher and member of UNM’s extended roster, was fatally shot in Albuquerque’s Nob Hill area early Saturday. The final two games of the Lobos’ home series against Air Force were subsequently postponed.
